Night has fallen quietly, almost imperceptibly, like a cat slipping into a room while you’re reading a book, and only later do you realize it has been there the whole time.

The sky above Dolac isn’t dark; the light lingers between the buildings, trapped like a thought unwilling to leave. The wet pavement reflects the lamp in the center of the square, making it seem as if there are two worlds.

A few people pass by, but their footsteps make no sound. Or at least I don’t hear them. Perhaps it’s because, on nights like this, the city speaks in silence. Windows glow like tiny private galaxies; behind each one, someone sits, pondering something they will never tell anyone.

I stand at the edge of the square and feel that if I stepped a little deeper into that orange light, something unexplainable might happen. Not necessarily dramatic. Perhaps I would just meet a version of myself that decided to stay here, under the lamp, and wait.
