In the deep, the scorpionfish becomes black, perfect camouflage, a silent predator. The red scorpionfish appears bright in shallow light, but red wavelengths fade quickly with depth. Melanophores concentrate pigment, darkening its body to near-black. Combined with a textured, irregular surface, it becomes virtually invisible to other fish. Perfect camouflage for a silent, venomous predator. A creature both majestic and venomous, it moves unseen, a shadow among shadows.
